9th Rifle Brigade were part of 42 Brigade, 14th Division that arrived in France in May, 1915, and in June and July 1915 they were in the Railway Wood sector of the Ypres salient. On 28th July, 1915, they moved into the front line here at the start of a very ill-fated tour. The enemy were to launch a devastating liquid fire attack on the trenches held by 42 Brigade on 30th July and during the two days before this they kept up a constant artillery bombardment of the British trenches as they registered their guns for the forthcoming attack. On 29th July, Frank Elms was one of the victims of this shelling. |
